The European Commission and regulators from 16 European countries met at the NMC today to discuss the future of EU legislation on the recognition of professional qualifications for nursing.

Regulators from Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Hungary, Ireland, Luxembourg, Malta, Poland, Portugal, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and the United Kingdom discussed in detail a questionnaire on issues that needed to be addressed. The delegation was welcomed by NMC Chair, Professor Tony Hazell.

Jurgen Tiedje, the European Commission official leading on the review of the legislation, encouraged stronger cooperation among regulators and invited all EU-27 member states to provide their national experience over the last 5 years.

The regulators agreed to share information on their registration processes, education standards and provisions for continuous professional development, language competence and exchange of information cross-border on fitness to practise cases.

The next of these series of meetings will be held in Brussels hosted by the European Commission on 22 June. Midwifery regulators are meeting to discuss the same process for midwifery on 21 June in Brussels.
